"Circus is an art form that has been redefined in the last two decades. Certainly there are regular circuses like Brazil Jack, but there are also new circuses, such as Cirkus Cirkör. Similarly, the jazz has been remodeled and does so constantly, or rather there is the same wit as in the circus world between more traditional jazz and innovation.
The guitarist Kasper Agnas has put together a quintet with two saxophones played by Julia Strzalek and Signe Emmeluth, Mauritz Agnas on bass and Karl-Henrik Ousbäck on drums, which also plays saxophone. He calls the group Kaspar Agnas Circus and connects closest to a modern way of creating, where many influences come together to something new. When I hear the group, I associate with Ornette Coleman's freer groups, before he started playing free jazz, and to Bill Frisell's way of making music. Roots backwards are always there, even though the quintet carved out its own expression, a freer jazz where the boundaries between theme, solo and group play are almost erased. Each one contributes to creating the special dynamics that become the group's signature, among other things, there is tension between the melodic and the more abstract where even the rhythm can be solid or fluid. A bunch of young musicians who in their own way show where the cabinet should stand."
